President Yoon Suk Yeol is seeking a separate meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden to discuss support for war-ravaged Ukraine while the two leaders are in Lima, Peru, for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
Yoon is scheduled to attend a trilateral meeting with Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday, local time, to check the progress of cooperation since last year’s historic Camp David summit and seek ways to move forward.
The South Korean leader is also set for a one-on-one with Ishiba on Saturday.
Meanwhile, a high-ranking official from the top office said an anticipated meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will most likely take place after he takes office in January.
The official said Trump’s camp has told diplomatic missions in Washington that the president-elect is prioritizing domestic political issues and an internal review of key appointments.
The South Korean top office, meanwhile, intends to continue communication with the president-elect’s camp regarding policy issues and maintain contact between Yoon and Trump.
