Report: The leaders of South Korea and China will hold summit talks for the first time in two years, on the fringes of the APEC summit in Lima, Peru.
At a press briefing Thursday, Kim Tae-hyo, the presidential office’s first deputy director of national security, said President Yoon Suk Yeol and Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet for one-on-one discussions Friday morning, local time.
Yoon and Xi previously sat down for talks on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Indonesia in November 2022.
The security aide said Yoon and Xi are expected to seek ways to vitalize bilateral economic cooperation, as well as cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and discuss regional issues such as security on the Korean Peninsula.
The South Korean leader is also seeking a separate meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden to discuss support for war-ravaged Ukraine.
Yoon is scheduled to attend a trilateral meeting with Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday, local time, to check the progress of cooperation since last year’s historic Camp David summit and seek ways to move forward.
The White House said the leaders of South Korea, the United States and Japan will discuss a “coordinated response” to the presence of North Korean troops in Russia at their upcoming trilateral summit.
He is also set for a one-on-one with Ishiba on Saturday.
Regarding the trilateral summit, U.S. National security adviser Jake Sullivan said during a separate news briefing that the three will discuss a “coordinated response” to the presence of North Korean troops in Russia at their upcoming trilateral summit.
Meanwhile, a high-ranking official from the South Korean top office said an anticipated meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will most likely take place after he takes office in January.
