The main opposition Democratic Party(DP) held a large rally on Saturday, condemning the Yoon Suk Yeol government and calling for a special counsel investigation to get to the bottom of snowballing allegations against Yoon and first lady Kim Keon-hee.
At the rally in central Seoul, DP Chairman Lee Jae-myung said power in the country must be used only for the people but that Yoon, Kim and power broker Myung Tae-kyun appear to have become the country’s owners.
DP floor leader Park Chan-dae called for a special counsel investigation to examine allegations against the first lady, saying the public insisted on this step to restore fairness and common sense and establish justice.
The DP and minor opposition parties then joined a rally organized by civic groups.
The DP said about 300-thousand people participated in its rally, while the police estimated that about 25-thousand people gathered at all the rallies organized by the opposition parties.
A conservative group also held a rally nearby, but there were no clashes reported.
