Yoon Arrives in Brazil for G-20 Summit after Peru Visit

Anchor: President Yoon Suk Yeol arrived in Brazil on Sunday to attend the Group of 20(G-20) summit after concluding his four-day trip to Peru for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(APEC) summit. Yoon held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and the leaders of Vietnam and Peru on the sidelines of the APEC gathering.

Report: President Yoon Suk Yeol held his second summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Saturday on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Lima, Peru. 

During the 50-minute talks, Yoon and Ishiba expressed “strong concerns” over the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia and agreed to closely cooperate to ensure the international community continues to send a unified message.

Reaffirming the growing importance of bilateral cooperation amid rapid changes in the regional and global situation, the two leaders agreed to elevate the bilateral relationship between the two nations ahead of the 60th anniversary next year of the normalization of diplomatic ties.

In Lima, Yoon also held separate summit talks with the leaders of Vietnam and Peru, with a focus on cooperation on supply chains. 

In the meeting with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, the two sides agreed to expand cooperation in the defense industry through the joint development of naval ships, and to promote cooperation in the mineral sector.

On the occasion of the summit, South Korea and Peru signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the mineral sector to exchange information on supply chains for key minerals. 

They will also conduct joint geological surveys and technological cooperation.

Yoon and Vietnamese President Luong Cuong also agreed to expand cooperation in supply chains for key minerals during their summit talks.

Yoon took over the chairmanship of APEC from Peru, since next year’s APEC summit will take place in the South Korean city of Gyeongju. 

In Brazil, the second stop of Yoon’s South American trip, Yoon is scheduled to attend G-20 summit meetings from Monday to Tuesday.

He will attend the launch of the Global Alliance for Hunger and Poverty on Monday and outline Seoul’s strategy to deal with global hunger. 

On Tuesday during a G-20 session, Yoon will propose global initiatives to combat climate change and accelerate the transition to clean energy.
