Main opposition Democratic Party(DP) Chairman Lee Jae-myung has accused the prosecution of abusing its authority and covering up crimes.
The DP chair issued the criticism on Monday during the party’s Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly.
Lee said if the prosecution fails to do its job properly, it is appropriate to appoint a special counsel to protect the undermined legal process and restore law and order, an apparent reference to the proposed investigation targeting first lady Kim Keon-hee.
He said the people want to see law and order restored, calling for the passage in the National Assembly of a bill that would make the first lady the target of a special counsel investigation.
Expecting President Yoon Suk Yeol to veto the bill again, Lee said the country is not just for the president and pledged his best efforts to ensure the special counsel investigation goes ahead.
