The presidential office said the United States gave South Korea prior notice of its decision to allow Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied long-range missiles to strike inside Russia.
A senior official accompanying President Yoon Suk Yeol to Brazil for the Group of 20 summit told reporters on Monday that when Washington makes decisions, it notifies Seoul in advance.
U.S. President Joe Biden reportedly allowed Ukraine to use missiles from its Army Tactical Missile System to strike inside Russia, in response to the participation of North Korean troops.
As for the possibility of Seoul providing weapons to Ukraine, the senior official said that as allies, South Korea and the U.S. can exchange necessary weapons if needed, but that there have been no decisions or no detailed discussions regarding Ukraine.
The official also commented on Yoon’s interview with Brazilian newspapers in which he said South Korea’s relations with the U.S. and China are not about choosing sides.
The official said South Korea will have to discuss matters first with the United States as its ally, but will also make efforts to further develop its relations with China.
