President Yoon Suk Yeol has announced South Korea’s participation in a global initiative to deal with hunger and poverty, pledging to provide ten million U.S. dollars this year to address the food crisis in Africa.
Yoon made the pledge Monday during a session of the Group of 20(G-20) summit in Rio de Janeiro, saying South Korea will join the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, which was launched at the start of the G-20 summit.
Yoon said that as a founding member, South Korea will actively join the G-20’s efforts to overcome hunger and poverty.
The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, a major achievement by Brazil’s G-20 presidency, connects members seeking policy support to eradicate hunger and poverty with countries willing to provide expertise or financial support.
Yoon also disclosed a plan to increase South Korea’s food aid through the United Nations’ World Food Program from 100-thousand tons to 150-thousand tons next year.
In addition, Yoon said South Korea will enhance its partnerships with emerging economies to achieve mutual growth.
