The ruling People Power Party(PPP) has urged the prosecution to swiftly investigate allegations that main opposition Democratic Party(DP) leader Lee Jae-myung misused a provincial corporate card when he was the governor of Gyeonggi Province.
In a statement on Tuesday, PPP chief spokesperson Han Zee-a said if Lee indeed spent taxpayers’ money on personal expenses, it is a morally and legally serious matter.
The spokesperson said the opposition leader should not be exempt from the universal principle that everyone is equal in the eyes of the law.
She then called for the truth to be revealed during a trial and for Lee to be held accountable.
The prosecution indicted the former governor without pretrial detention over allegations that he paid for personal meals and other expenses with the provincial card and budget between 2018 and 2021, worth 107 million won, or around 77-thousand U.S. dollars.
