A bipartisan delegation of lawmakers visiting the United States said U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s diplomacy and security team nominees see the need to enhance the alliance with South Korea.
At a meeting with South Korean correspondents in Washington on Tuesday, ruling People Power Party(PPP) Rep. Kim Gunn said he could feel the bipartisan support from the U.S. Congress during the visit.
Kim said the alliance will remain strong during Trump’s second term, adding that his picks for secretary of state and national security adviser, Sen. Marco Rubio and Congressman Mike Waltz, understand the importance of the alliance.
Kim said he met with U.S. lawmakers who told him that Trump’s comments during the campaign about how to share the costs of stationing U.S. troops on the Korean Peninsula were directed toward the American people.
He said they told him that while there may be negotiations over the matter, there will not be any changes to U.S. defense pledges, and that any changes to the alliance would require congressional consent.
The delegation also expressed concerns about the possibility of tariff increases under the Trump government, to which the U.S. lawmakers said those policies are likely to ease during congressional reviews.
