The main opposition Democratic Party will push to impeach three senior prosecutors who led an investigation into stock manipulation allegations concerning first lady Kim Keon-hee but decided not to indict her.
Democratic Party floor spokesperson Noh Jong-myun said Thursday that the opposition will seek to submit motions to a plenary session on November 28 to impeach Lee Chang-soo, head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, as well as Cho Sang-won and Choi Jae-hoon.
The spokesperson said a second plenary session will have to convene on November 29 as lawmakers will have to start voting on the motions 24 hours after their submission and conclude within 72 hours.
Ruling People Power Party floor leader Choo Kyung-ho accused the main opposition of venting its anger in a “political act,” after party leader Lee Jae-myung and his wife were convicted of election law violations last week.
At a party Supreme Council meeting, Choo said the opposition’s moves are motivated by apprehension and fear ahead of a ruling on Monday in Lee’s trial for subornation of perjury.
