A heavy snow warning has been issued for Seoul for the first time in almost 15 years as more than 20 centimeters hit the capital city.
The Korea Meteorological Administration upgraded its heavy snow advisory for northeastern Seoul to a warning at 5:50 a.m. Wednesday, with heavy snow alerts issued for the entire city.
It is the first heavy snow warning for Seoul since January 4, 2010.
A heavy snow warning is issued when snow is expected to reach 20 centimeters or more within 24 hours.
As of 7 a.m. Wednesday, Seoul’s Seongbuk District received 20-point-six centimeters of snow, while Gangbuk saw 20-point-four centimeters and Seodaemun got 17-point-two centimeters.
The city government raised its emergency response posture for snow clearing by one notch to Level Two at 7 a.m.
The roads to Mount Inwang, Mount Bukak, Samcheong-dong and Waryong Park are closed to traffic.
Between Wednesday and Thursday, Seoul and the northwestern parts of the capital region are forecast to see up to ten centimeters more snow, while inland areas of southern and northeastern Gyeonggi Province are expected to receive more than 20 centimeters.
