The government says it will establish ten world-class level universities centered on scientific research and provide special benefits to scientifically gifted students that receive prizes at the International Science Olympiad.
Under the "NIS" program, the government plans to expand its investment in university research and development by 15 percent in a bid to raise South Korea's scientific research level to that of the world's elite science nations.
The ten world-class research-oriented universities are to be established by 2012.
In a move to lure more excellent students into scientific colleges, the government will also provide military service benefits to outstanding students in the fields of science, arts and sports.
The government will also reduce the period of obligation of those working as research experts as an alternative to compulsory miltiary service from the current four to three years.
