U.S. President George Bush had spoken to Chinese President Hu Jintao over the phone to discuss a protracted standoff over North Korea's nuclear weapons development program, among other bilateral issues.
White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Saturday the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment on efforts to peacefully resolve the nuclear crisis.
China is North Korea's closest ally and host of six-party talks aiming to resolve the issue.
McClellan said Bush also told the Chinese leader that U.S. policy towards Taiwan remains based on the "one-China" policy but stressed legislation also requires Washington to provide Taipei with weaponry for self-defense.
