National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik said parliament will respond to President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law in accordance with constitutional procedures. 

In an emergency press conference at the Assembly on Tuesday, Woo called on the public to trust the National Assembly and to calmly observe the situation. 

He asked all lawmakers to immediately assemble at the main chamber, urging the military and the police to keep their places without agitation. 

Under Article 77, Section 5, of the Constitution, the president is required to lift martial law upon request by parliament based on a majority vote.

​The Democratic Party currently holds 170 seats in the 300-member Assembly.
