President Yoon Suk Yeol lifted martial law early Wednesday morning, about six hours after declaring it, as the National Assembly voted unanimously to call for its repeal.
Yoon announced the decision at approximately 4:20 a.m. in a televised address, saying he would immediately grant the parliament’s request and lift martial law through the Cabinet.
The announcement came about three and a half hours after the Assembly passed the motion.
Yoon said he convened the Cabinet immediately but the quorum has not yet been reached because it is too early in the morning, adding that he will lift martial law as soon as there is a quorum.
But he urged the Assembly to immediately stop what he called its reckless actions, accusing lawmakers of paralyzing state functions through repeated impeachment motions, and legislative and budget abuses.
The government said later that the Cabinet approved the lifting of martial law at 4:30 a.m.
