Seoul subway workers called off plans to strike as their labor unions reached agreements with the management in last-minute negotiations early Friday.
The largest labor union at Seoul Metro, which operates subway lines 1 through 8, announced at around 2 a.m. that the final negotiations had produced an agreement.
The union and the management reached the agreement after ten hours of marathon talks that started at 4 p.m. Thursday.
The two sides agreed to a wage increase of two-point-five percent and the hiring of 630 new staff members.
Two other unions representing workers at the subway operator also reached agreements in negotiations, one around 2:50 a.m. and the other around 4:20 a.m.
Upon concluding the deals, the subway workers canceled a strike that was set to begin Friday.
However, a walkout is underway at the Korea Railroad Corporation, affecting subway lines 1, 3 and 4 in the capital area.
