U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin appears to have canceled a trip to South Korea after President Yoon Suk Yeol’s botched attempt to impose martial law.

Pentagon spokesperson Patrick Ryder said in a press briefing Thursday that Austin will travel to Japan after delivering a keynote address at the Reagan National Defense Forum near Los Angeles on Saturday.

Earlier, Japan’s Kyodo News reported that Austin was planning to visit South Korea after Japan next week and meet with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts.

However, South Korea was not included in the itinerary that the Pentagon announced Thursday.

A Pentagon official said Thursday that there are “no plans” for Austin to visit South Korea at this time.

According to Reuters, a U.S. official said planning had been underway for a trip in the near term but it was determined that now was not the appropriate time.
