The ruling People Power Party remains officially opposed to President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment, after an emergency general assembly for its lawmakers that lasted 12 hours.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting ended around 11:30 p.m. Friday, ruling party chief floor spokesperson Shin Dong-uk said there was no specific discussion of the party’s position and that it is understood to remain unchanged.
The spokesperson said floor leader Choo Kyung-ho and Park Jung-ha, chief of staff to the party chairman, delivered lawmakers’ opinions to President Yoon during a visit to the top office in the afternoon.
The president, in response, said he would listen to the opinions and give them serious thought.
When asked whether the party had requested that Yoon step back from his duties, Shin said it had made no such request and that there was no specific list of demands.
