The main opposition Democratic Party has tabled a motion to impeach Interior Minister Lee Sang-min for his alleged role in President Yoon Suk Yeol’s martial law move earlier in the week.
In a notice to the media on Saturday, the main opposition party said the motion was submitted to the National Assembly at 10:30 a.m.
On Friday, the party’s chief Supreme Council member Kim Min-seok accused the minister of plotting the illegal martial law plan in advance and advocating it, as well as perverting the normal Cabinet review procedure.
The impeachment motion is expected to be reported to a plenary session Saturday and put to a vote Tuesday.
The Assembly previously impeached Lee in February 2023, accusing him of mishandling the Itaewon crowd crush in October 2022.
Lee returned to his duties after the Constitutional Court unanimously rejected the impeachment in July that same year.
