Main opposition Democratic Party(DP) Chairman Lee Jae-myung has vowed to pass a downsized budget for next year in a plenary session of the National Assembly on Tuesday, the last day of the regular parliamentary session.

The DP chair said Tuesday that the swift passage of the national budget will be of some help in alleviating the current crisis and public anxiety, stressing that the budget directly affects people’s lives.

DP floor leader Park Chan-dae said if additional funds are needed to facilitate an economic recovery and meet people’s needs, these concerns can be resolved through a supplementary budget later.

The DP railroaded a budget proposal through a parliamentary budget committee session late last month, setting next year’s budget at 677-point-four trillion won, down four-point-one trillion won from the initial plan proposed by the government.

The party chair also requested an emergency economic meeting for the government and the ruling and opposition parties.
