National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik has decided to launch a parliamentary investigation into last week’s martial law incident.
Woo announced his decision Wednesday, saying President Yoon Suk Yeol’s testimony is necessary to shed light on the situation.
Invoking his own authority as the speaker, without a partisan request, Woo said the National Assembly will immediately form a committee to take charge of the investigation.
He said that while the martial law decree may be an extraordinary measure that restricts the fundamental rights of citizens, the National Assembly is not subject to such control.
He emphasized that he will thoroughly investigate who issued the orders, for what purpose, and how these events transpired.
Calling for cooperation from both ruling and opposition parties, Woo urged for a swift response to form the special committee for the parliamentary investigation.
