The Supreme Court has upheld a two-year prison sentence and a fine of six million won, or over four-thousand-100 U.S. dollars, for Cho Kuk, the leader of the minor opposition Rebuilding Korea Party, for offenses including forgery, graft, use of falsified documents and obstruction of business.
Cho had argued that his sentence was excessive, but on Thursday the top court ruled that he had no valid grounds for an appeal.
The court also dismissed the prosecution’s appeal regarding some acquittals by the appellate court, finding that there were no legal errors in the judgment.
As a result of the ruling, Cho will be stripped of his seat in the National Assembly and is ineligible to run for public office for the next five years.
The minor opposition leader was convicted for academic fraud related to his children, as well as unlawfully interfering with a government inspection.
