A ruling party lawmaker says Iraqi militants have formed a terrorist group aiming to wage terrorist attacks on South Korean nationals in Iraq.

Rep. Woo Won-shik of the ruling Uri Party said he had received the information from an unidentified individual who recently returned from a trip to Iraq.

Woo made the comments Monday during an ongoing parliamentary hearing on the abduction and murder of South Korean civilian Kim Sun-il.

An official of the South Korean Embassy in Iraq who was present at the hearing said the Embassy has alerted the Foreign Ministry in Seoul to the information.
