The United States has approved the potential sale of equipment needed to improve South Korea’s Navy destroyers.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency, under the Department of Defense, announced on Monday that the State Department has authorized the potential government-to-government foreign military sale, estimated to be worth 300 million dollars.
The proposed deal, aimed at upgrading South Korea’s KDX-II Class destroyers, would provide South Korea with modified MK 99 fire control systems; personnel training and training equipment; and updated weapon direct system software modification, integration and installation.
The Pentagon said the proposed sale would support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a major ally.
It added that the potential sale would improve South Korea’s capability to perform anti-surface and anti-air warfare missions and that South Korea would use the enhanced capability as a deterrent to regional threats and to strengthen its homeland defense.
