Main opposition Democratic Party Chairman Lee Jae-myung has reportedly requested the recusal of a judge presiding over his bribery trial in a case concerning alleged illegal money transfers to North Korea by a third party.
Lee’s side filed the request with the Suwon District Court on Friday, seeking the recusal of Judge Shin Jin-woo.
Under the Criminal Procedure Act, a defendant can ask a judge to recuse himself or herself if there is a concern that the judge’s involvement could result in an unfair trial.
Lee’s side plans to appear for a preliminary hearing at 10 a.m. Tuesday to explain the reason for his request.
Due to the recusal request, the trial proceedings have been immediately suspended.
The opposition party chair was indicted on bribery charges in June in connection with remittances of funds to North Korea in 2019 by Ssangbangwool Group, allegedly made on his behalf.
