The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Tuesday condemning human rights violations by North Korea and called for efforts to address the issue.

In a General Assembly meeting at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, the resolution was passed by consensus without a vote, making it the 20th of its kind since 2005.

Its adoption by the General Assembly came about a month after the Third Committee, which handles social, humanitarian and cultural issues, adopted it by consensus.

The resolution sheds light on the serious human rights situation in North Korea and calls for measures to improve it.

This year’s resolution expressed concerns about the North’s declaration that it will not pursue reunification with South Korea and called on the country to repeal laws and cease practices that suppress freedom of thought, expression and religion.
