A court has issued a pretrial detention warrant for a former chief of the Defense Intelligence Command who allegedly took part in planning the recent martial law attempt.
The Seoul Central District Court issued the warrant on Wednesday for Noh Sang-won, the intel agency’s former commander, who is facing charges of conspiring to commit treason.
Issuing the warrant, the court cited the risk that Noh would flee or destroy evidence.
A court hearing to review the request for the warrant to detain Noh was scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. but canceled as the former commander refused to attend.
Noh, who served as the head of the command under the Park Geun-hye government, is suspected of participating in preparations for martial law as a civilian in support of former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun.
Considered close to Kim, Noh is also suspected of drafting the martial law decree.
