U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to visit South Korea for a final farewell trip before the Biden administration ends next month.

A diplomatic source in Seoul said on Wednesday that Blinken's visit is likely to take place between early and mid-January before the launch of the new Trump administration on January 20, with the exact date still under discussion.

Blinken will also reportedly visit Japan as part of his farewell tour.

An official at Seoul's foreign ministry said that the government is working to arrange a meeting with foreign minister Cho Tae-yul during his visit.

Blinken is expected to stress the strength of the South Korea-U.S. alliance, while also expressing his stance on the martial law situation and South Korea's democracy.
