World leaders have sent condolences to South Korea over the deadly plane crash that killed 179 people at Muan International Airport on Sunday.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen wrote in a social media post that she was “heartbroken to see images of the plane crash in Muan,” adding that Europe stands with South Korea in this time of grief.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz sent his condolences to the victims of the crash, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a message to acting President Choi Sang-mok offering his deep condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families.
Pope Francis told worshippers at the Vatican that his thoughts are with the many families in South Korea who are in mourning today and that he joins “in prayer for the survivors and the dead.”
U.S. President Joe Biden released a statement on Sunday morning with a pledge to provide U.S. support, saying that Americans’ thoughts and prayers are with those impacted by this tragedy and the U.S. stands ready to provide any necessary assistance.
