A Seoul court has issued an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is under investigation on suspicion of treason and abuse of power in connection with the martial law affair earlier this month.
The Seoul Western District Court granted the warrant Tuesday in response to a request filed the previous day by a joint team of investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials(CIO), the police and the defense ministry.
The warrant is valid for one week and allows investigators to question Yoon in custody for up to 48 hours.
The court also issued a search warrant.
This is the first time an arrest warrant has been issued for a sitting president.
The CIO, which is leading the investigation, is expected to send officials to the presidential residence soon to execute the warrants.
Yoon previously ignored three summonses from the CIO to appear for questioning.
