Seoul Sends Envoy to Beijing to Protest History Distortion

South Korea has sent a senior diplomat to China to renew its protest over recent Chinese claims to the kingdom of Goguryeo.

Director-general of the Foreign Ministry's Asia-Pacific Affairs Bureau Park Joon-woo will use his trip to Beijing to urge the Chinese government to stop claiming the ancient Korean kingdom as part of its own history.

Park plans to meet high-ranking officials of China's Foreign Ministry and to officially ask for proper action to address the matter.

Last month, the Chinese Foreign Ministry's Website deleted references of the ancient Goguryeo kingdom from its online introduction to Korea's history.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government completely deleted on Thursday the entire section on South Korea's ancient history from its Foreign Ministry Website. The Korean history section of the Website now covers only Korea's modern history dating back to the establishment of the South Korean government in 1948.

The development came after the Chinese government notified Seoul of its decision to delete the section Monday.

China has also deleted the ministry's online section of Japanese history before World War II in response to Seoul's protest that it did not accurately reflect the history between South Korea and Japan.
