Seoul is considering to propose to hold inter-Korean talks with Pyongyang on the preservation of cultural assets, as part of a united front in tackling the ongoing dispute with China over claiming rights to the ancient Goguryeo Kingdom.
South Korea plans to urge the North to hurriedly activate an inter-Korean cooperative council in areas of society and culture, a measure that was agreed upon at the recent Cabinet-level bilateral meeting. When the inter-Korean council is launched, it is Seoul's plan to place the envisioned talks for cultural preservation under the authorities of the council.
The government is to also offer financial support to projects across the border, aimed to unearth and preserve cultural relics of the Goguryeo Kingdom.
A government official said Sunday inter-Korean exchange and cooperation have been initiated much earlier in the arena of historical issue, owing to the nationalistic and non-political nature.
The official stated the acute dispute over the ancient kingdom calls for not only diplomatic efforts confronting China but also long-term coordination between the two Koreas, adding that the prospective talks will pave the way for active inter-Korean cooperation against China's attempts to distort historical facts.
