A senior government official says Seoul plans to send a consul to the northern Iraqi city of Irbil, where additional South Koreans troops are to be stationed.

Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency quoted the official as saying Sunday that close collaboration among related government agencies is underway to ensure protection of South Korean nationals in Irbil.

Currently, there are around 40 South Koreans, including businesspeople, in the Kurdish-controlled Iraqi city who are making preparations for the gradual arrival of the 3,600-strong Zaitun military unit.

The number of Korean nationals is expected to increase upon the completion of the troop dispatch.
