The Science Ministry projects the number of domestic R&D institutes established and run by corporations would exceed 10,000 by next month.

The figure represents a five-fold increase from 1995, when the nation had 2,300 corporate research and development institutes.

The South Korean workforce in the R&D field has grown from 6,400 researchers in 1995 to some 14,000 as of the end of last month, exhibiting a slower increase than the growing number of institutes.
