The Seoul government says it will ask Washington to postpone the timeframe of its planned troop reduction in South Korea, citing security concerns.
A senior government official says if the United States withdraws its troops along with key military logistics by the end of next year as planned, it would create a security vacuum on the Korean Peninsula.
The official said the government plans to ask Washington to extend the reduction deadline by one year to guard against possible security threats.
The government is to make the request at the 11th round of the Future of the South Korea-U.S. Alliance Policy Initiative talks, scheduled to be held for two days beginning Thursday in Seoul.
The two sides also plan to formally ink agreements on the relocation of the main U.S. Army garrison out of Seoul.
