S. Korean Army Pushing to Change 24-year-old Uniforms

The South Korea Army is pushing to modify its uniforms - unchanged in the last 24 years - to be more comfortable and better suited to the demands of modern combat operations. Constant requests have been raised to alter the Army's dress, which is based on the designs of Japanese and U.S. armies. The plan to outfit the troops with new apparel has been four years in the making and is currently pending the approval of the Defense Ministry. If the ministry and President Roh Moo-hyun greenlight the plan, soldiers may be attired in new fashion from as early as next year. The Army has presented tentative designs of a new set of battle dress fatigues, clothes for indoor duties and class-A uniforms, which will be "less heavy and neater in fashion." The current green battle dress uniform is expected to be changed to dark-brown, a color that "better matches the skin and hair color of Koreans." The Army will also provide soldiers with a light cap weighing 180 grams, compared to the current 330-gram cap.
