A controversial history textbook accused of whitewashing Japanese wartime atrocities has been earmarked for use at a new school opening in Tokyo next year.

Featuring selections from highly nationalist writers and published by Husosa, the 'New History' textbook was included on the reading list for an elite, integrated middle- and secondary school that will open in 2005.

The education committee of the Tokyo city government on Thursday approved the textbook's use in a five to one vote.

On hearing the news, Japanese civic groups that had been campaigning against the history book and its publisher asserted they would hold street rallies and a signature drive in protest.
