WP Calls for Overhauling of Olympic Scoring System

A columnist of the Washington Post has called for overhauling what he called the unfair scoring system of the Olympics.

In Sunday's edition of the Post, Joy Goodwin said a new system needs to be institutionalized in the Olympics so that judges can double-check their scores and take a second look before awarding medals.

The columnist said giving athletes more power to challenge unfair results, and installing a system of reviews and do-overs by judges is the only way to guarantee a level playing field.

By doing so, Goodwin said, innocent victims would not end up taking the fall for clerical errors.

She also said South Korean gymnast Yang Tae Young, who lost out on a gold medal due to scoring errors, has every right to demand justice, comparing his case to a student who was denied the honor of being class valedictorian because a school clerk had miscalculated the grade-point average.
