The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters has activated a Level One emergency response posture to cope with heavy rains in the capital region.

According to the interior ministry, Level One was in place as of 11 a.m. Wednesday, with heavy rain alerts issued for Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province.

Authorities are maintaining the heavy rain crisis alert level at “caution,” the second-highest notch on the four-tier scale.

Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung instructed officials to restrict access to locations at high risk of flooding, such as underpasses and along rivers and streams, and to bolster monitoring of areas prone to floods, including underground parking lots.

Earlier in the day, Incheon’s Ongjin region reported a downpour that brought close to 150 millimeters of rain per hour, while in Seoul’s Gangseo District and the Gyeonggi cities of Gimpo and Goyang the intensity neared 100 millimeters per hour.
