One person died and two others were injured after a fire broke out on an oil tanker and a cargo ship anchored next to each other at a port in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province.

The fire on the two-thousand-600-ton-class petroleum transport vessel and the 24-ton delivery vessel started at around one a.m. Saturday, before being put out some seven hours later.

Authorities said it took longer to extinguish the fire as the tanker contained about two-thousand-500 tons of toxic chemicals and 100 tons of fuel oil.

The captain of the cargo ship, in his 50s, died after being found unconscious in the fire.

A crew member in his 30s suffered severe burns, while another in his 20s sustained burns on his ankle.

The Korea Coast Guard Station Yeosu said it began an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire, as well as the damage incurred.
