For the first time, South Korea’s Marine Corps will participate in an annual multinational exercise jointly led by the United States and Indonesia.

This year’s Super Garuda Shield joint military exercise will be held from Saturday through September 7 in Jakarta and other locations in Indonesia.

About five-thousand personnel from 14 countries will take part in the two-week exercise.

Marines from South Korea, the U.S., Indonesia and the Netherlands will participate, while countries without marine corps units, including Singapore, Australia and Canada, will send army units.

South Korea will send about 20 Marines, who will engage in small-unit combat training, special warfare training and amphibious landing drills.

The Super Garuda Shield exercise was launched in 2007 with the aim of improving jungle warfare capabilities between Indonesia and the U.S., but has since expanded to include a larger number of participating countries.
