The labor ministry has summoned Kim Bum-soo, CEO of SPC Samlip, a subsidiary of the food and bakery giant SPC Group, regarding the death of a worker at the company’s factory Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, in May.
The ministry’s Seongnam branch began questioning Kim on Friday about possible violations of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
Kim is suspected of failing to enforce proper safety measures at the time of the worker’s death.
The worker, in their 50s, died from being caught in a spiral cooling conveyor.
The police are conducting a separate investigation targeting seven people, including the plant manager and safety supervisor, who are suspected of causing death by occupational and gross negligence.
Last month SPC Group pledged to change its production structure to prevent accidents and eliminate night shifts longer than eight hours, just two days after President Lee Jae Myung chastised the group during a visit to the Siheung plant.
