The National Assembly passed a bill on Monday revising the Commercial Act to strengthen minority shareholder rights and corporate oversight by requiring large firms to adopt cumulative voting and expand the number of audit committee members who are independently elected.

The ruling Democratic Party pushed the measure through despite a filibuster and boycott of the vote by the main opposition People Power Party(PPP).

This follows a July amendment to the Commercial Act that broadened directors’ fiduciary duties to shareholders.

On Sunday, lawmakers also approved the so-called yellow envelope bill, which bolsters labor rights and restricts excessive damage claims against labor unions, again over a PPP filibuster and vote boycott.

The PPP denounced both laws as disruptive to the country’s economy, with floor leader and Emergency Committee leader Song Eon-seog vowing to pursue legal action, including a potential constitutional complaint.
