President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump held a summit on Monday to discuss security, trade and other issues.

In the talks at the White House, Lee asked Trump to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, expressing support for Trump’s efforts to pursue dialogue with Kim.

Lee said he hopes Trump will open a new path for peace on the Korean Peninsula and that if Trump resumes his role as a peacemaker, Lee will work hard to support him as a “pacemaker” who sets the rhythm for the peace efforts.

Trump said he’d like to meet Kim this year, reiterating that the two have a good relationship.

Lee and Trump also agreed to enhance economic cooperation, particularly in the shipbuilding sector.

In addition, the two leaders stressed the importance of strengthening trilateral cooperation among South Korea, the United States and Japan.
