U.S. President Donald Trump says he would like the United States to take ownership of the land in South Korea where its military bases are located.

Trump made the remarks on Monday during his summit with President Lee Jae Myung at the White House.

Trump said the United States spent a lot of money building a fort and South Korea also made a contribution, but he would like to see if the U.S. could get rid of the lease and get ownership of the land where it has a massive military base.

When asked by a reporter whether he is considering reducing the number of U.S. troops in South Korea, Trump said he didn’t want to talk about that because the two nations are friends.

It marks the first time the U.S. has publicly raised the question of the ownership of its military bases in South Korea.
