Rep. Jang Dong-hyeok, who was strongly opposed to the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, has been elected as chairman of the main opposition People Power Party.

On Tuesday the party announced the results of a runoff between Jang and former Labor Minister Kim Moon-soo during a party convention at the National Assembly Library in Seoul.

Jang secured 220-thousand-302 votes, or 50-point-two percent of the total, beating Kim by a narrow margin of three-thousand-366 votes.

In his acceptance speech, Jang said it was party members who made his victory possible, pledging to devote all his efforts to uniting the country’s conservative forces to bring down the Lee Jae Myung administration.

Votes from party members accounted for 80 percent of the final tally, with 46-point-55 percent of party members participating, while the other 20 percent reflected the results of a public opinion poll.
