Japan said yesterday’s summit between President Lee Jae-myung and U.S. President Donald Trump “holds significance for regional peace and stability.”

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters Tuesday the meeting confirmed both stronger bilateral cooperation and the importance of trilateral ties with Japan.

He declined to comment on Trump’s stated openness to talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, but stressed Tokyo will continue close coordination with Washington on abductions and other North Korea issues.

Hayashi also addressed the recent discovery of human remains at the wartime Chosei undersea coal mine, saying Yamaguchi police are examining the finds.

He noted the labor ministry had found no new expert opinion to justify government-funded diving surveys, maintaining Tokyo’s cautious stance on financial support.

Japan has so far resisted calls from civic groups to back recovery efforts, citing safety concerns and uncertainty over burial sites.
