The number of one-person households in South Korea has surpassed ten million.

According to data from the interior ministry on Wednesday, there were 24-point-12 million households in total as of late 2024, up by around one million since 2020.

Of those households, over ten million consisted of just one person, up from more than nine million households four years prior, accounting for 42 percent of the total.

The number of four-person households, on the other hand, dropped from four-point-61 million to three-point-94 million in the same period.

The population continued to fall for the fifth consecutive year, from 51-point-83 million registered individuals in 2020 to 51-point-22 million in 2024.
