South Korea and the United States conducted a large-scale joint river-crossing exercise along the Namhan River in Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province, from August 25 to 27 as part of the Ulchi Freedom Shield drills.

The Army said Wednesday that about 300 troops and some 150 pieces of equipment, including South Korea’s amphibious Suryong bridge system and U.S. Stryker armored vehicles, took part.

The Suryong operates as a vehicle but can rapidly convert into fixed and floating bridges to support troop movements.

The drill focused on interoperability, with the two militaries jointly building bridges and beginning operations with reconnaissance using unmanned surface vessels and assault boats.

The Army said it will review the exercise outcomes to identify further training needs and strengthen combined tactical and joint drills with U.S. forces.
