The court overseeing former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s insurrection trial says it will review any requests from the prosecution or the defense to permit broadcasting of the proceedings.

The Seoul Central District Court issued the statement Monday as it began the 16th hearing in Yoon’s trial.

Jee Kui-youn, the presiding judge, said one media outlet had applied for permission to broadcast the trial under the Special Prosecution Act, but that request was denied because only the prosecution and the defendant are legally eligible to apply.

Jee asked the special counsel and the defense to consider whether they want to submit similar requests, noting the social controversy over the trial proceedings.

He also said the court plans to conclude the insurrection trials by the end of this year.
